The manufacture of this natural fuel is an important part of the annual cycle of woodland management and continues the traditions of rural craftwork. Timber that is felled to make room for new plantings of hazel in Burnicombe Wood is used to stock the emblematic iron kilns and 24 hours later, after precise age-old techniques, high quality charcoal is produced. The sale of which helps the owners to sustain their work and future development of this precious part of the Dartmoor National Park.
